Discussion: Internet privacy and e-commerce

Discussion: Internet privacy and e-commerce

What is your position on collecting and distributing consumer information collected through the Internet? Should companies be allowed to collect this data and sell it to third parties? Why or why not?

  1. Privacy over the internet is getting harder and harder to get. Companies keep getting greedier. They do not care if anyone gets hurt in the process as long as they make their profit. I personally belive that companies should be regulated a lot closer than they are now. It's even apparent that somecompanies are going beyond the law to get what they want. CEO's of major companies are serving sentences because they would not stay within the laws boundaries. Privacy should be apparent but not to apparent. Ibelieve that if some rights are taken away from the citizens in order to combat crime then that is acceptable. Some might say that privacy should always be shown, i personally think that if a person has nothing to hide then it would be perfectly acceptable to have the government keep tabs on anyone.

  2. I think companies can be allowed to collect data on a consumer if the consumer says they can. With out permision the companies should not be allowed to collect data on people. Also, they should not be allowed to take any information they collect and sell it to a third party. I feel this violates the consumers right to privacy on the internet.

  5. Consumers are taking a big risk when they participate in internet commerce. Their credit card numbers and consumer information are more easily accessible to both hackers and corporations looking to sell this information to third parties.
I believe that internet consumers do have a right to privacy regarding their information. If there is a question about a websites privacypolicy, you can usually click on a link titled "Privacy" and everything is explained there. If a consumer is still unconfortable about the privacy practice of a website, then the should not do business with them. The only problem I have regarding internet privacy would be a website promising full privacy protection from third parties, and then selling the information anyway. Other than instances like this where privacy is promised, online consumers shop at their own risk.

  7. Personally, I rather dislike the surprise of signing up for something online (such as a newsletter) and then suddenly being bombarded by emails for diet pills, male enhancment drugs, and "young teens going wild". What makes the selling of personal information so terrible is that these companies are not selling your information to LIKE companies, but selling it to smut advertisers, and anyone who's willing to pay a small fee.

If I was required to give my address to a store if I wanted to sell or return something to the store, I would not want them to sell my PRIVATE information to credit-card companies, and any other form of junk mail that usually is simply a waste of space.

There is such a thing as privacy, but it seems that when someone is willing to pay a small fee to invade said privacy, it's okay to do so. It's called "making a profit".

It's not right. It's an invasion of privacy rights. Someone would not sell your information to a person off the street (or at least you would hope not) who they knew would be sending you letters you didn't want, or someone who would be calling you when you did not want to speak with them. Someone that you would rather left you alone... Yet for some reason it's okay to sell it to a COMPANY who will do the exact same thing?

There should not be a price on privacy.

  8. I feel that companies should be able to collect data on their costomers because it is better for buiness. It also allows buinesses to do better marketing. With collection of information on the internet it gives a buiness a wider areay of people an information to collect. Companies I feel should be allowed to sell it to third parties. This will create other buiness opertiunities to other people. People and buinesses should be able to make money off of what they know. The information industry is also a booming industry. As for privacy issues I feel that people should some what be informed that their information is going to be put on a list becase they peopl ehave th option of not havin git on their. People also have a chioce not buy products or give information out companies. Poeple also have the option of not buying prodcuts or useing services where compaines will sell their information afterwards. I also feel if companies can get this information individual people should also have acess to it. I think that individuals should eb able to have acess to the same list as these companies can buy. This would be good for small buiness adn other things.

  9. Well i think that they definately should not be able to sell this information to third parties becasue it is a violation of privacy. if I give my information online in order to purchase something, then that company better not give it out to anyone else or any other company. I understnd that sometimes the information is used to do studies and try to eventually improve the internet, but there are so many dnagers to giving that infiormation out that I think it should be kept private.

  10. Companies should not be able to collect this data and sell it to other companies without the permission of the person. I think that this is a violation of privacy. If I were to give a company my information, I would give that information with the confidence that it would only go to that company. Companies should have to inform the customer that they are going to do this. Perhaps there could be an option when the customer fills out the information about whether or not the customer wants there information on the Web. In any case, companies should not have the right to share information about customers to other companies.

  11. i do not think it is right that companies conpile information about people and sell it to therd parties. information about me and what i do should be private. it is not up for sale. the information you give to a companie about yourself is given to them in confedence that it will be used by them but not sold by them. this is a violation of peoples privacy. you should be given the option of heather they can sell your information or not, and the majority of people will say no because it their personal information.

  12. Privacy is a big issue on the interent today, when consumers buy or give there information on the internet to companies they are at risk of their credit card number getting into the hands of hackers. I don't think that companies should be allowed to sell data about a conumer unless that customer says it is ok. they shouldn't do this becuase the company is making money off that conusumer while at the same time that person could lose a whole lot of money because they put inforamtion about there credit card wich could get stolen. This is a violation of invading of provacy beucase that is that person own personal information and he/she is trusting the company with that information to be classisfied unless told different by that person. This type of data should be treated just like medical files which are classified unless the person says it is ok to release that infomration, becuase when you give information such as your credit card number to a company alot is at stake for that person such as money.
